In July we were in Jersey to provide live coverage of the Natwest Island Games.
The biennial Island Games, hosted in Jersey this time around, saw over 3,000 competitors from 24 Islands participate in 14 different sports.
We worked in association with LED screen specialists, iMag, to provide live coverage of football, tennis, swimming and athletics to 5 LED screens scattered across Jersey. We also streamed the content online so the other 23 island's could follow their team.
With a job of this magnitude, we were inevitably faced with many technical challenges. The most notable was working out how to provide live coverage from 4 different sporting venues so shortly after one another. In order to make this work, our technical directors created a Portable Production Unit (PPU), which allowed us to arrive on location and set up a simplified rigging station. From here, we could vision mix a multi-camera output that was sent through Fibre links (installed by Jersey Telecom) directly back to our Broadcast Truck, which was situated at the main hub on the island. From the truck, the live feed was then broadcasted onto the screens and online.
The PPU ingested 3 live camera feeds at each location. We used 2 radio linked cameras, that we were able to be set-up anywhere on the field/track/court, and 1 wired camera. Using vMix Live Production - software developed by Studio Coast Ltd- we also provided instant slow-motion replays. This was a fantastic feature for the output of each sport as not only did it give viewers a chance to see a goal/throw/serve again in more detail, but it gave a high sense of production value.
